A patent gives its holder the right to prevent others from using the patented solution in the course of trade. Patents can be used to protect technical solutions, e.g. products and their parts, systems, methods of manufacturing, other methods, and new ways of using something which already exists. Patenting enables the patent holder to reap the benefits of investments made in research and development.
The patented solution must, in addition to being of a technical nature, be novel and inventive. Novelty means that the invention has not been made available to the public before applying for the patent. Inventiveness refers to that the solution must significantly differ from previously known inventions (prior art).
